COBRA coverage allows qualified beneficiaries the right to maintain group health benefits when coverage would otherwise be lost due to a qualifying event. Qualifying events are events that trigger the loss of insurance benefits through your employer such as termination of employment, reduced working hours, or dependent children aging out of your plan. There are several types of events that impact dependents of employees as well, allowing them to continue coverage known as "COBRA coverage". This continuation of benefits is the same coverage that the employee was enrolled in while actively insured with the employer and the employee of qualified dependents may be eligible for a specific time frame from 18 to 36 months depending on the event type.
